The essence of making a change

Author: Johnny Tan

Through our life we are bound to go through changes. Some changes are regarded as big while others are considered as small. Regardless which one it is, change may sometimes start out as being difficult because the first step is always the scariest, but eventually it is for the best if we continue to focus on the final desired outcome.

When we are fixated on a target, everything else falls away as each step takes us closer to our goal, and the path to the final destination will unveil itself.

Whenever I was in a difficult situation, my late Sanguine Savannah mom Joni, always reminded me of this. “What the caterpillar refers to as the end of the world, the butterfly calls it as the beginning of a beautiful life.”

I remember my mom Progressive and Spiritual mom Elsa Mae, telling me years ago that when reading a fortune cookie you should always read to learn, and not read to rebuff. She went on to explain that our mood or present circumstance has a lot to do with our final take on the fortune we receive. It is true that the cookies are factory made, and the fortune messages are generated by a computer and put into the cookies by machines; however, we receive our cookies by random selection, which means there is a touch of the unknown involved that could be a little mystifying.

Ordinary folks like us, just wonder if sometimes the fortune we receive is truly meant to be a reflection of the past, a snapshot of the present, or perhaps a preview of the future. Regardless of which one it is, one thing for sure is that it is meant to be a pick-me-up, perhaps thought-provoking, and a fun after-meal conversation piece.

I can only speak for myself when I say this—regardless of how I am feeling at any given moment I can always use a little good news to brighten and enhance my day. I once received a fortune cookie that read, “Genius does what it must, and Talent does what it can.”

This phrase reminded me of what my mom Malaysian mom Nyah, told me when I first started working. She said, “In every one of us there is a seed of greatness. This seed of greatness holds the key to our successes. The Genius in us helps us to identify our goals, dreams, and desires, and the Talent in us helps us to accomplish them with a heartfelt passion.”

However, just because we have this seed of greatness, does not guarantee us greatness and success. It is what we do with it that will ultimately determine our success. This means that we can all live a perfect life if we choose to, and if we apply ourselves by using the knowledge that we learn from within, and from the lessons we learn along our lives’ journeys, we can certainly achieve our desired success.

We may not realized this but living our daily lives is pretty much like dancing. My late ballroom instructor mom Betty, told me years ago that dancing is always from the heart, as it requires passion and commitment. Echoing my Malaysian mom Nyah’s sentiments, like life and in dancing, I cannot achieve a full-time reward with a part-time effort.

I will never forget what my late mom Betty, asked me the first time we talked about my taking ballroom dancing lessons. She asked, “Do you want to dance or do you want to DANCE?” I was quite confused about the question at first and asked her to explain what she meant by that.

She went on to explain, “If you want to dance this is what I will teach you,” showing me some dance patterns as she moved around the dance floor. “However, if you want to DANCE, then this is how I will teach you,” stretching out her arms sideways, holding her head slightly tilted to her left, and looking slightly above her line of sight over my right shoulder, in perfect form for the waltz.

That is when I knew that I definitely wanted to learn the latter. From that day on I was on a different path of dancing excellence. She taught me how to develop floor presence, created an appearance makeover for me, and custom-tailored a physical fitness program to help me have a better dancing posture. I was taught that I could accomplish anything if I focused my mind, body, and spirit on it.

Since I started ballroom dancing I have not only learned how to do the Cuban walk, but more importantly I have learned how to do the dance of life with a renewed right spiritual rhythm.

Time is the luxury we all have

Author: Johnny Tan

Have you ever wondered sometimes that we seemed to always be in a hurry to make a quick decision because we think if we do not, we would simply missed an opportunity of a lifetime. However, when we do make that quick decision, we sometimes find ourselves in a quandary. Perhaps this is a good food for thought…

I will always remember what my Italian foster mom Carol, told me when we first met in the summer of 1980. She said, “Time is a luxury we all have.” It is often said that no time is the right time and any time is the right time.

To have faith that the right thing will come along at the right time and in the right way is an indulgence that we absolutely should make room for in our lives. As we hold on to this belief, it will make passing up situations that are not a good fit for us a lot easier.
